Why farmers use it

• Back-to-back cropping in the same year, intensive farming and heavy use of chemical fertilisers on high-yielding crops have left soils short of sulphur. For higher yields, sulphur matters just as much as nitrogen, phosphorus and potash.
• Used to control powdery mildew ('safed massi') and to destroy fungus and mites, and to supply sulphur to standing crops along with irrigation water.
